The Area and Where to Stay
Skiathos is small enough to know well in a week: roughly twelve kilometres end to end, with Skiathos Town and its harbour on the south-east corner and a chain of sandy bays running west towards Koukounaries. The south coast is where life happens, a string of beaches, beach bars and tavernas linked by one coastal road, while the north stays wilder, all pine forest, walking trails and the famous pebbles of Lalaria, reached only by boat. Villas sit mostly in the green hills behind the south coast and around Kalivia, the quiet agricultural heart of the island, where you get privacy, pool terraces and sea views yet remain ten minutes from town. Staying near Skiathos Town suits those who want restaurants and nightlife on foot; the western hills suit families who plan their days around beaches.
Things to Do
Beaches set the rhythm. Koukounaries is the celebrated one, a long golden crescent backed by a protected pine forest and lagoon, while Banana, Vromolimnos and Agia Eleni each have their own following. Charter a boat, or join a caique from the old harbour, to reach Lalaria's white pebbles and sea caves on the roadless north coast, and to swim off the islets of Tsougria. Fans of Mamma Mia can seek out filming spots here and on neighbouring Skopelos, an easy day trip by hydrofoil. Ashore, walk the old kalderimi paths to the Evangelistria Monastery, visit the medieval ruins of Kastro on the northern cliffs, and end the day with a drink on the Bourtzi, the pine-topped peninsula that splits the town's two harbours. Food and Local Flavour
Skiathos Town punches well above its size at the table. The lanes behind the old harbour hold everything from classic tavernas serving grilled octopus, horta and slow-cooked lamb to polished modern Greek dining rooms, and the evening volta along the waterfront is a ritual in itself. Look for Sporades specialities such as local honey, cheese pies in coiled filo and fish landed that morning at the harbour. September is many regulars' favourite month: the sea is at its warmest, the light softens and the crowds thin, while early October can still deliver fine beach days. Spring, around Greek Orthodox Easter, shows the island at its greenest, with processions and feasting in town.
Getting There
Skiathos Alexandros Papadiamantis Airport (JSI) sits right beside the town, famous among aviation enthusiasts for its short runway and low approaches over the road. Seasonal direct flights arrive from across Europe between May and October, and Athens (ATH) provides year-round connections with a short onward hop. Ferries and hydrofoils link the island to Volos and Agios Konstantinos on the mainland and to Skopelos and Alonissos, which makes island-hopping straightforward. On the island, villa stays work best with a small hire car or with transfers arranged by the concierge; nowhere is more than half an hour away.
